Start with your own numbers

Headline rates hide the pence-per-transaction fee, which is what actually hurts a business with a low average sale. Enter your monthly card turnover and transaction count to see the effective rate on each plan.

Only the takings you expect to run through the card reader.

The number of separate card payments, not the value.

Optional. Leave at zero if nearly everything is a UK consumer debit card.

  • Pay As You Go£70.00 / month · 1.75%
  • Sell In-Person£63.19 / month · 1.58%
  • Sell In-Person Premium£57.59 / month · 1.44%

At this volume, Sell In-Person Premium is the cheaper of the two by £6.81 a month, before hardware. Hardware is a separate one-off cost.

Estimates only. Rates shown are for domestic consumer debit cards. Credit cards, commercial cards and non-UK cards commonly attract different, usually higher, fees. Check the current Tide fee schedule for the card types you actually accept.

Formulas and rate assumptions used in this calculator

Monthly processing = (turnover × plan percentage) + (transactions × fixed fee). The optional credit and commercial card share adds an indicative 0.4 percentage points to that portion of turnover, because published debit rates do not apply to those cards.

Subscription costs are shown including VAT at 20%. Processing fees are shown as charged. VAT-registered businesses can normally recover input VAT, so compare like with like for your own registration status.

  • Pay As You Go: 1.5% + 5p on domestic consumer debit cards, no subscription.
  • Sell In-Person: 0.89% + 3p on domestic consumer debit cards, £17.99 + VAT a month.
  • Sell In-Person Premium: 0.69% + 3p on domestic consumer debit cards, £19.99 + VAT a month.

Nothing you type here is stored or transmitted. Only the fact that the calculator was used is recorded, and only if you accepted analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Which card reader is cheapest for a UK sole trader?
It depends on your average sale and monthly card turnover, not on the headline rate. A pay-as-you-go rate with no subscription usually wins at low volumes, while a subscription with a lower percentage wins once turnover is high enough to cover the monthly fee. Put your own figures into the fee calculator on this page.
Does the Tide Card Reader need a Tide business account?
Yes. The Tide Card Reader and Card Reader Plus take payments into an eligible Tide business account, so they are not standalone readers you can pair with any bank.
What is the difference between the Tide Card Reader and the Plus?
The Plus adds a built-in paper receipt printer and a larger screen, and weighs roughly three times as much. The standard reader is lighter and cheaper and sends receipts by email.
Is the cashback offer guaranteed?
No. £100 cashback for eligible new Tide applicants who process at least £500 of Tide Card Reader transactions within the first 60 days of opening the account. Tide alone decides eligibility and payment, and promotions can change or end at any time.
Are you independent from Tide?
We are an independent publisher and a Tide referral partner. We may earn a commission when an eligible applicant uses our links or code. That does not change the fee maths or the limitations we publish.
